Summary:
The Alaska SeaLife Center Community Liaison will support the development and execution of strategies that enhance relationships with the Seward community and surrounding regions. This role focuses on fostering community awareness, participation, and positive impact in alignment with ASLC's mission to promote scientific research on Alaska’s rapidly changing ecology. The Community Engagement Liaison will play a key role in advancing community relations through local partnerships, educational initiatives, and outreach programs.
The Community Engagement Liaison will work closely with the Director of Community Engagement to implement engagement initiatives, strengthen partnerships, and ensure inclusive, equitable practices are at the forefront of all interactions. This position is crucial to ASLC’s goal of expanding its community presence and supporting the organization’s sustainability.
Education/Training Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, communications, public relations, social science, or related field; Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and communication, education and program development.
Essential Duties:
1. Assist in the execution of the CORaL (Community Organized Restoration and Learning) Project and help build and strengthen community partnerships, including representing ASLC at local community events, meetings, and initiatives.
2. Under the guidance of the Director, build and sustain relationships with community organizations, schools, nonprofits, and other local stakeholders, ensuring regular planning and follow-up on community engagement activities (weekly, monthly).
3. Serve as a key point of contact for the planning and coordination of community-based projects, ensuring seamless execution and alignment with engagement objectives.
4. Representing ASLC at community forums, meetings, and events, promoting a positive image of the organization and advocating for its mission and initiatives.
5. Collaborate with the Director to involve ASLC staff and leadership in community outreach activities, fostering staff engagement and ownership.
6. Provide logistical and administrative support for community engagement efforts, including tracking budgets, scheduling meetings, and maintaining comprehensive databases of community contacts.
7. Develop and manage data entry processes for ASLC’s community engagement library, continuously updating as the CORaL Network Partnership project progresses.
8. Under the Director's guidance, leverage partnerships to co-organize and manage local events, such as Stewards of Our Bay, Seward Science Symposium, and invasive species monitoring initiatives.
9. Monitor and assess community engagement activities, ensuring alignment with established goals and providing feedback to facilitate ongoing improvement.
10. Assist in the development and implementation of community engagement strategies that align with and advance ASLC’s mission and goals.
11. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, goodwill, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
12. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Skill in written and verbal communication, experience giving public presentations and/or working with various age groups in an educational setting, ability to understand and interpret research in progress and marine science topics, follow instructions, and work independently. Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
